What is onboarding and offboarding?

Purpose: Utilizing onboarding and offboarding is a quick and efficient approach to keeping track of items that need completion when an individual gets hired or leaves your company. This guide will teach you what options are available with BambooHR's onboarding and offboarding feature.

Create templates

Onboarding and offboarding templates are created and maintained in Settings. A template contains a list of tasks that need completion during the onboarding or offboarding process of an employee. These templates are copied over to an individual employee profile to activate the process for the employee.

Filter tasks

Filter tasks in templates to mark them as applicable or non-applicable for those matching specific criteria.

Attach files, e-signature documents, and allow an employee to upload files

If you need an employee to review specific information as part of a task, attach one of your company files. If you utilize BambooHR's e-signature feature, you can attach an e-signature document to a task and have the employee sign* it before completing the task.

If you assign a task to an employee, you will see an option to allow the employee to upload files to the task before completion. If the employee uploads a file, it will automatically upload to the Employee Uploads folder on their Documents tab. If you select Require a file to be uploaded before the task can be completed, the employee will not be able to complete the task until they upload the document.

*An e-signature document will automatically set to optional before completing the task. If you would like to require a signature before the task's completion, toggle on the star (see above).

Assign tasks

Assign tasks to those responsible for completion. Then determine when you want your assignees to be notified.

You can assign tasks on the template level or the individual employee level.

Receive email notifications

Receive automatic email notifications with important information concerning an employee's onboarding or offboarding process.

Track completed tasks

Completed tasks and the associated history will remain available for reference on the employee profile.

Keep track of all assigned tasks in the inbox

In addition to an automatic email notification, an assignee will have an outstanding task in their BambooHR inbox until they complete the specific onboarding or offboarding task. As an administrator, you can change the inbox filter to Assigned to Company for viewing outstanding tasks for all employees.

Comment on tasks and attach files

Comment on tasks before and after completion. If a task allows an employee to upload files, the employee will see Attach Files within the task. Files uploaded by the employee will automatically upload to their Documents tab in the Employee Uploads folder. However, files attached in the comment line via the paperclip icon will upload to the Tasklist Attachment folder.

Create employee-specific tasks

Create or edit an existing task's items on an employee-specific basis to customize the employee's task list.
